PixelJunk Shooter (PS3) Review
With its flat colors and open playfield, you’d be reminded of PixelJunk Eden, its predecessor – and because of its cartoon-ish look, you might be able to reminisce of PixelJunk Monsters! Well, definitely, it is not any of the two – its PixelJunk Shooter!
While presenting an obvious strengthening of Q’s grip on a fun and plain game canvass, Shooter keeps on presenting the format of the series which is simple yet enjoyable.
The main principle behind Shooter is simple though: A mining colony on a planet had already asked for help as humanity invades the universe and drained its resources – it is now up to you and your army to help the stranded miners, explorers and researchers to survive without getting anyone killed by peculiar monsters that lives in the caverns of the planet underground. Your items include missiles, grapple arm, guns and other special additions that you may found necessary in the long run in the game.
What makes the game fun is the shooting and rescuing part. What’s better is that it appears realistic with the liquids and other elements appear while playing every level. It starts when you are trying to run away from the flowing lava; other elements come in your way as the game progresses and these substances will react with each other somehow – they are not all liquid as there are smoke, ice, soft rock as result of mixed substances or elements. What’s interesting is that these liquids are very similar to the real one – slowly, it gushes and spreads at the perimeter of the caves.
One thing you might be interested with Shooter is that it won’t take much of your time – it is short and the three worlds is composed of only a few levels for each. Needless to say, after the credits, you will be receiving a notification that a sequel or an Encore episode is under way. Though short, it doesn’t erase the excitement much while playing the game.
Shooter does not get unnoticed among the unique PixelJunk games list. It might not be as polished as the Racers nor doesn’t it cater the Monsters’ DIY approach on tower defence style and probably not as open as Eden’s challenging levels, however, none of these makes it worse than the other. This can be accounted to the smart level design which was appropriate for the puzzle parts, the local two-player co-operational, screenshot and online ranking additional features. This game is just too cool to miss ! You can download it here.
